Current Projects

mlh architects & planners’ architectural work has covered a wide variety of projects over the years including commercial, educational, sport stadiums, residential and industrial developments. Recent examples are listed below by project type.

Park Lane Offices, Century City

A new low rise “A-Grade” office block in Century City, to be completed in 2011. An emphasis on privacy and protection from the elements has inspired this courtyard themed office building where the use of landscaping and ‘green screens’ help to internalise the park atmosphere within the office environment.
Construction is due to begin mid 2011.

OBZ Square, Student Residence

OBZ Square student residence for UCT, Observatory Main Road, Cape Town provides accommodation for 880 students in rooms of 11,5 square meters, each with an en suite shower and WC.

Each group of a maximum of 11 rooms is serviced by a kitchen, adjacent to the group of rooms.

The design has resulted in a building located along the external perimeter of the site which forms the largest possible internal open courtyard which in turn is split into two similar rectangles with a central “bridge” of accommodation.

The open landscaped internal courtyards are located at the lowest level of rooms at first floor which makes them easily accessible by all residents of the building via a large central social space located between the two courtyards.

The ground floor offers a range of additional management and study facilities such as a computer room, study rooms, meeting and interview rooms and offices for residence management. This foyer space has natural light and ventilation via a small but important landscaped atrium that opens into one of the internal courtyards above.

The Main Road edge of the development is brought to life by the building being set back five meters from the street boundary offering a wide, safe and useable landscaped pavement zone with shops on both sides of the entrance to the residence.

The site footprint has been maximized for development other than along the William Street edge where the intention is to provide a more pleasant landscaped environment to what is a narrow and predominantly residential street.
